ARTistic Pursuits

Disclaimer:  I received this complimentary product through the
Homeschool Review Crew.

Drawing with Graded Graphite Pencils ~ Intermediate Level Art Core 3 is part of the Art Core Series from  ARTistic Pursuits. Art Core 3 is intended for middle school, ages 12 and up. The Intermediate Level builds on the previous two levels. There are 9 Units and each unit has 4 lessons. This hardcover book comes with a DVD and Blue-ray disks. You can also choose to purchase the online course for online streaming. You will get LIFETIME ACCESS to the course.

There are 4 types of lessons in each Unit:
  1. Art Materials Video Instruction (1st page of each unit). In a 10 minute video students will learn how to use their art materials, apply what they learn, draw from observation.
  2. Creativity: Building a Visual Vocabulary (2nd page of each unit). Students are introduced to a topic. The video or book will explain using words and pictures. Students will use the world around them to create a work of art.
  3. World of Art Appreciation and History ( 3rd and 4th pages of each unit). Students learn how techniques they are learning have been used by famous artists. Students will be given a history of the artists life, facts about the artist, and the period of time they lived in. By applying techniques learned and observations made students then create a piece of art.
  4. MASTER LESSON (5th and 6th pages of each unit). Now is the time that the student applies everything that they have learned throughout the unit and bring a variety of techniques together to create an end of the unit masterpiece.
At the end of the book teachers/parents will find Evaluation & Objectives pages. The Objective for each lesson are clearly outlined. When evaluating your students lessons you are essentially "Measuring a Learner's Proficiency on Well-Defined Course Objectives." When it comes to giving a letter grade each has a brief synopsis of what qualifies the student to obtain said grade.

Unit 1 ~ Line

Here my 72 year old mother and my 14 year old daughter are watching a video
and drawing. We all commented on how effortlessly the instructor draws her
examples. It can be somewhat intimidating for someone who has trouble drawing
a round circle. We were in awe at the natural, artistic talent that the instructor has.

Lesson 1: Lines and Edges

Creativity Lesson 2: Line is an Element of Art

Art Appreciation Lesson 3: World Artist and History

Master Lesson 4: Apply the Element of Line

My mom wanted to do the vase lesson.
The lesson is in Unit 3 ~ Shape
Lesson 1: Constructing Shapes

After drawing her vase she commented on how she really liked
the explanations on making vases. By using a series of lines both
straight and diagonal it helps to create a symmetrical vase.

My daughter's attempt before listening to the explanations. You
can see that the sides are not symmetrical.

Now, for the Artist in our family. You can obviously see the stark
difference between the previous drawing and the next drawings.
My daughter simply flipped through the book and chose lessons that looked
fun. This first drawing is from Unit 6 ~ Form.
Master Lesson 4: Apply the Element of Form
The objective of this lesson is to show that you know about form by
drawing from life.

Unit 2 ~ Space
Art Materials Video Lesson 1: Arranging Objects

Unit 7 ~ Land Forms
Master Lesson 4: Apply the Element of Form to a Landscape

Unit 3 ~ Shape
Creativity Lesson 2: Shape is an Element of Art
Gathering objects, 3 or more and drawing them.

DVD/Blue-ray

Here is a step-by-step from one of the Blue-ray videos.
I took pictures sporadically throughout the lesson.
You can get a feel for how the instructor worked through the drawing process.

Unit 4 ~ Texture
Focus on SPACE and TEXTURE:

  • See positive and negative shapes for accurate drawings.
  • Add distinct texture marks to close-up objects.
  • Add less-distinct marks to distinct objects.

  • You can see that the buffalo in the forefront has distinct textures
that make it stand out. The buffalo further back is one texture
making it blend more into the landscape.

The negative space between the two buffalo as well as the size help to
give the illusion of three-dimensional space.

The distinct texture differences in the buffalo close-up make that the
    focal point of the drawing.

The arrows are pointing to negative space.

My children were not huge fans of the DVD/Blue-ray option. In order to use this option they had to use our flat screen television that is out and open to everyone walking in and out. I do not know much about PC's but MAC computers no longer have CD drives and haven't for quite some time. We did do a few lessons via Blue-ray but it wasn't a fan favorite.

    Streaming Format

The streamed format is a wonderful for those that prefer online options. Each streamed book is an exact copy of the physical book. Instead of flipping through a physical book you tap/click to move from page to page. What makes the online streaming version so amazing is the built in features to the flip book. Those features include:
    • thumbnails
    • note taking capabilities
    • zoom in
    • full screen option
    • toggle sound
    • search feature
    • type in page numbers
The streaming format also gives you LIFETIME ACCESS! Check out Artistic Pursuits SAMPLE of a flip book and a streaming lesson. There are streaming options for Kindergarten through High School

    Streaming Flip Book

The streaming version not only keeps track of the page you are on
but you can also put in a specific page number and it will go to that
    page number in the text.

Off to the left hand side you can see the thumbnail pages. This is helpful
to see what is about to be covered and what has just been covered.

As you listen to the lesson or are working through a given lesson we
have all been conditioned to take notes. Well ARTistic Pursuits has built
into the flip book a note taking option. Simply click on the note icon
and start typing out your note and your note will be saved on the specific
page that you assign the note to go. You can also delete a note if you
no longer need or want it.

If you need to do a project on texture you can simply do a search for "texture"
and all of the pages within the book that talk about texture will come up.
    Pretty cool, isn't it?

My daughter and I had to giggle a bit because we realized that even
a seasoned artist doesn't always have perfect art. Brenda's vase is not
symmetrical. It made us feel a bit better knowing that even she at times
    doesn't always hit the mark.

    Voilà
    A vase!

"Have you ever been frustrated in your art?
That is a sign to pause.
    Evaluate your art.
    Look at it.
Decide what part of it seems off to you.
    Make changes to that area.
And your artwork will be back on track."
    Brenda Ellis

The online streaming option is by far the best fit for our family and definitely preferred by my children. With everyone having their own laptop and each of them preferring to do most subjects independently the online streaming option is the winner! Thank you ARTistic Pursuits for the hard work you have put into creating the online streaming option. It is wonderful. The flip book is awesome.

We have used Artistic Pursuits over the years and have greatly enjoyed their curriculum. My Fellow Crew Members have been reviewing the K-3 Art Programs and the Art Core Series. Be sure to check out the reviews.
