Goodnight Farm Animals

My first question is, where should I begin. It's an amazing book! Let's begin with the beautiful watercolor illustrations in Goodnight Farm Animals. The watercolor paintings throughout the book are stunning examples of artistic talent. A sense of realism is evident in the animals. This landscape is breathtaking. This book is filled with many pictures that will delight children. It is the artwork in this book that drew me in as an adult. Each animal has a cute two-paragraph poem. In one of the stanzas there are rhyming words.

A sleepy calf rests in the barn. Its charcoal black eyes stare at you in a mesmerized manner. Its soft downy hair indicates the calf's young age. As stars above provide some light, it is nestled in hay for the night. The text that accompanies the calf: "As twilight falls on the gentle farm, cow yawns in the barn, safe and warm. Under the loft she'll rest her head, Curled up tight in her straw bed." Despite the text saying cow, I see a calf.

There is a donkey peering out of the stall door in the brilliant watercolor of the donkey. Could it be thinking about its day?Is it tired but trying to stay awake? The chestnut brown eyes of this creature are heavy. Between its ears is a fluffy tuft of fur that stands straight up. There is an abundance of hay surrounding the donkey. It is clear that this donkey is well cared for and loved by its owner. How does the author describe the donkey? "Donkey, his ears long and round, Rests in the stable safe and sound. The stars look down with twinkling eyes, As night sings many lullabies."

Along with the cow and donkey, your child will meet a horse, a pig, a goat, a dog, a sheep, a cat, a chicken, a peacock, a pigeon, and a duck. A unique looking farmhouse welcomes readers at the end of the book. It's not what you'd expect from a typical farmhouse. As I look at this farmhouse, I can't help but think of a forest cottage. A stone path and a stream with rocks surround the farmhouse, which is surrounded by forest land, lush green grass, and red flowers. This watercolor painting is beautiful. It ends: "The stars shine on the peaceful farm, And our friends rest in sleep's arm. 'Goodnight Farm Animals' the Moon sings, Until the morning when the day begins." It is absolutely beautiful not only in pictures but also in the writing. If you have a child, I would highly recommend adding this book to their library. A number of other books are included in the "Goodnight" series by this author. They're definitely worth checking out.
