This is my college age daughter's latest artwork. It is for a class she is taking. 

I am always completely awed by her talent. 

 

Drive Thru History® Adventures

Over the past weeks my daughter has been working through Bible Unearthed from Drive Thru History Adventures. "Bible Unearthed is a 12-part series that explores the history, importance, and impact of archaeology - and how discoveries help us better understand the ancient world!" This course is a digital, online course that is designed to be completed in 12 weeks. One Adventure is to be completed each week. Each adventure includes a video, a written exposition/breakout, worksheets, and "Dig Deeper" articles. This is intended to be a self-paced course so students can definitely go at their own pace. Younger students may need more time, while the older student may be glean from the extra additional reading that is suggested. 

So what does a week look like?

Monday: Watch an episode and read the written exposition

Tuesday: Complete optional activity

Wednesday: Read the Dig Deeper articles and/or other research

Thursday: Re-watch the weekly episode and review the written material

Friday: Complete worksheets 

For the older, more advanced student Drive Thru History® Adventures recommends, Unearthing the Bible by Titus Kennedy.

Episode 6 entitled, Archaeological Mysteries, is 14:38 in length. The discussion is very intriguing as Dave Stotts and his colleagues tackle many archaeological mysteries such as, Where  is the Ark of the Covenant? and Why was Stonehenge actually built? These are just two of the many mysteries that are covered in Episode 6. 

Directing beneath the video there is text that the student is to read. The

text is more or less a summary of the video. It includes pictures of 

important archaeological items discussed during the video. 

Each video has a scripture reference to go along with it. For 

Episode 6 the scripture reading is, Isaiah 64:8 which says,

“But now, O Yahweh, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; 

And all of us are the work of Your hand.” 

The Optional Activity for this Episode is for the student to, "Drawing pottery and recognizing its type and date is a useful skill in archaeology. Look at some pottery images, make some basic sketches of them, and try to identify the date and type (bowl, lamp, cooking pot, krater, storage jar, jug, cult vessel)."

There are two Dig Deeper Articles for this Episode. The first is entitled, Pottery in Archaeology and the second is entitled, Solomonic Gates.

MathandAlgebra.com

MathandAlgebra.com is an online math program. There are four steps to the program. First, students watch tutorials that give mathematical concepts and then solutions. Next, students will work problems out on printable worksheets. Third, the student will test their knowledge of the subject matter by taking quizzes at the end of each course. Finally, students will earn badges upon completion of lessons and quizzes. There is both a monthly and an annual plan that can be purchased. 

My daughter said, "MathandAlgebra is a great curriculum that reintroduces simple math before teaching more advanced math and algebra. It thoroughly explains the lesson for the day in a video. You then print out a worksheet that you complete to the best of your abilities. If you have trouble, an answer key is provided to help you solve whichever problem you are having trouble with. At the end of each module, there is a 5 question test. I love that it is only 5 questions because it reviews everything you have gone over without making it too extensive. There are four different sections in the curriculum: Basic Math, Advanced Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra. After each section, you will be quizzed on the entirety of the section. I love this program because it is easy to understand and use and it does not rush you to move forward before you are ready."

I would definitely recommend MathandAlgebra.com to other homeschoolers and educators searching for a math program that covers multiple levels of math. My daughter has really enjoyed this online program and she greatly dislikes math! Be sure to read what my fellow crew members had to say about this math program. 

Thinkwell Homeschool

 Thinkwell Homeschool is an online video based math course for students. Courses offered are for 6th grade through 12th grade. They also offer Honors Courses, Advanced Placement & CLEP course, as well as College Math. My daughter has been working through Thinkwell's Instructor-Led Algebra 1. Students can access their math anytime, 24/7. Thinkwell Homeschool is a self-paced program. The subscription is for a 12 month period but if your student needs more time to complete the course you can purchase 1, 3, or 6 month extensions. Thinkwell has laid out a week by week lesson plan to help students stay on track. Each video lesson is approximately 5-10 minutes in length. The videos explain the new concepts with examples. As you student moves onto the practice problems the program will automatically grade their work. They can redo exercises more than once to improve their grades and better master the concepts. Students can also print out the study notes and practice problems for reference. This is also very handy for future reference. Twice a week, for two hours, students can enter a Zoom call with their instructor to get help. There are quizzes and tests to show your students mastery over the material that they have been learning. 

Your student will get a good amount of e-mails from 

Thinkwell. There are great reminders for the students!

When a new week is about to begin the instructor guides the student 

in what they need to do to prepare for the week. This is a great way

to set the student up for success.

Thinkwell offers placement tests for grades 6th through Algebra 2. 

The placement tests offer the perfect way to know exactly where your 

child needs to be within the Thinkwell program. 

Thinkwell offers a grade by grade sequence for both the typical

student as well as the accelerated tract.

Parents will be e-mailed progress reports. My daughter did not want me posting her progress report so I will honor her request. My daughter thoughts on Thinkwell, "At first I was really liking the program but then I soon got very frustrated. I was able to follow the lecture and understand everything that the teacher was saying including the examples. But then when we got to the practice problems NONE of them where even like the problems that he did in the lecture. I was so frustrated! I felt like the program was setting me up for failure. My grades were not good because of this." 

I had really hoped that Thinkwell would have been a good fit for my daughter but it hasn't. With that said, do check the program out for yourself and read what my fellow reviewers  had to say about Thinkwell Homeschool.

Prodigies is a FREE, fun, classical music download for children. I came upon this and had to share. 

Apologia Biology

My 9th grader has been ROCKING co-op Biology this year. I absolutely 

love homeschooling, but when my kiddos hit 7th grade I choose to send them

to co-op for science and literature. This year Apologia updated their Biology

book, 3rd edition. The only thing that I really do not like about the book is 

that is is softcover. It DEFINITELY is not going to hold up like the hardcover 

books.
