Becoming Mrs. Lewis
I am a huge fan of C.S. Lewis and was very excited to read, Becoming Mrs. Lewis. This novel tells the story of poet and writer, Joy Davidson, and her friendship turned marriage to famed novelist and writer, C.S. Lewis (aka Jack) as she called him. Early on Joy was simply looking for spiritual advice from Lewis. In both her communications with Lewis she found not only friendship but also faith. Eventually, their friendship would turn into love thus making her the future Mrs. Lewis.
There is so much more the Joy's life. She has a falling, crumbing marriage back in America. She is searching for answers to life and being an atheist is prompted by a friend to reach out to C.S. Lewis to get spiritual guidance. Her health slowly deteriorating over time eventually culminates in a terminal diagnosis of cancer after her marriage to C.S. Lewis. Her life was far from easy and simple.
The author, Patti Callahan, seems to have a bit of a feministic bent to her writing. She also does not seem to have a thorough grasp on the great works of C.S. Lewis as she seems to several times throughout her book misrepresent or angle her comments in a direction that seem to mis the mark about what C.S. Lewis was really trying to say through his writing. I think that overall Callahan gave a generally decent view of overall happenings but at times may have made Joy or Lewis to look more negative should have been portrayed.
