What a fantastic book! I absolutely loved it! 'How to Draw ~ Pencil Palette, Animals Like The Great Artists' is the perfect step-by-step guide to help children learn about and practice drawing from some of the greatest artists. The artists featured in this book include John James Audubon, Vincent Van Gogh, Johannes Vermeer, Georgia O'Keeffe, Katsushika Hokusai, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Jean Bernard, Edouard Manet, Samuel Colman, Ernst Haeckel, Franz Marc, Ohara Koson, and Paul Klee.
Two pages are dedicated to each artwork. On the first page, the title of the piece of art is accompanied by the artist's name. It specifies when the artist created the artwork. Several of the paintings contain artist biographical information or fascinating facts about the artist. This page also includes a picture of the artwork. Children are given step-by-step instructions on how to recreate the artist's work next to the artwork. The second page will contain a reproduction of the artist's work in some form. The page will never be blank. It always gives outlines, partially completed works, dots-to-dots, and color-by-number outlines.
Supplies needed:

Head of a Donkey (1818) by Jean Bernard. Bernard was influenced by an era of painting called the Dutch Golden Age. He was known for capturing the beauty of the outdoors in his many landscape paintings.
In this particular art project student's will be creating a black and white drawing of a donkey's head in pencil. Student's will use a 2B pencil, 4B pencil, and a 6B pencil. For this particular project students are given the outline of the donkey and are guided as to how best to shade in the donkey's head.
Edgar Degas' Before the Race (1887-1889) is reminicent of French Impressionism. It was said that while painting Before the Race, Degas had a life-size stuffed horse in his painting studio.
In this particular art project students will be finishing the painting, Before the Race using wax crayons. Wax crayons provide rich color to a work. A row of colors that the student will use is provided on the activity page. Student's are guided as to how recreate the rest of the painting.
It is most definitely not just a book for children. Anyone who enjoys learning about artists and recreating art will enjoy this book. This would be equally enjoyable for adults. The book is targeted at children ages 8-12. I would recommend this book for middle school and above.
