Fun Facts about puzzles. Did you know that European mapmakers used to create what they called "dissected maps" by gluing maps onto wood and then cutting it into small pieces. John Spilsbury, in 1760, is thought to be the first person to create the first puzzle map. Until the 1880's puzzles were know as "dissections". In the early 1900's jigsaw puzzles began being made out of cardboard material.
